History of YUGO
YUGO began in the late 1950's by a Southern California youth pastor, Al Johnson. Wanting to challenge his youth to seek, trust and serve God in a different cultural setting, Al took his youth group across the border into Mexico for a cross-cultural experience of sharing the gospel. These teenagers not only learned how to share their faith with others and trust God in new ways, they were used by God to lead Mexicans to Christ.
As local youth pastors heard reports about the life-changing experiences of these teenagers, they wanted the same experience for their own youth. More and more youth pastors began joining Al in taking their youth groups to Mexico. Attendance soon ran into the hundreds, and Al could not keep up with being a youth pastor and all of the outreach preparation needed. This led Al to gather several lay leaders and ministers and organize Youth Unlimited Gospel Outreach, or YUGO, Inc.
In 1965, YUGO was incorporated as a U.S. non-profit mission sending agency and is now widely known as YUGO Ministries. In November 2000, Canada YUGO began incorporation as a sister organization.
